Original Antique WWI German Brass Matchbox Holder,  TAKEN FROM GERMAN PRISONER and Brought Home by US Doughboy Vet
DESCRIPTION:
WWI German Matchbox Holder as shown. Brass with raised German "Crown, Gott Mit Uns" medallion. These were popular  accessories among the German soldiers, as just about everyone smoked and also as they needed matches to start campfires, etc. These helped protect the fragile matchboxes from being crushed and ruining the matches.
German matchbox holders made very popular combat souvenirs among our doughboy vets and were often picked up after the battles or taken from POWS. They had a great look, were small and convenient to carry, were a functional item for the doughboys to use themselves, and made a great combat souvenir! This one was with a doughboy's effects and undoubtedly a battlefield pickup or was taken off of a German prisoner and taken home by a US "Yank" soldier as a souvenir.
1 3/4" x 2 1/2" x 3/4". Has not been cleaned and has a nice deep aged brass patina. Excellent condition.
